چکیده

Nanofiltration of press liquor from viscose-type textile fibre production was investigated using a laboratory-scale cross-flow test apparatus. Feed solutions contained about 200 g/l sodium hydroxide and a high concentration of hemicellulose as a contaminant originating from the raw material wood. The effect of various pretreatments and the addition of reagents affecting the solution state of hemicellulose on flux, retention and irreversible fouling was studied. Turbidity measurements were used to track the evolution of hemicellulose aggregates. Aggregation generally coincided with distinct flux decline during nanofiltration thus indicating that this phenomenon may result in the build-up of gel layers at the membrane surface. Partial neutralisation with sulfuric acid caused extremely severe fouling, whereas methanol addition had a minor effect. The impact of heat treatment and oxidative degradation of hemicellulose on nanofiltration performance was attributed to changes in molecular mass distribution.

Membrane fouling in the nanofiltration of landfill leachate and its impact on trace contaminant removal

Nanofiltration (NF) is an attractive option for the treatment of landfill leachate. However, membrane fouling can be a major obstacle in the implementation of this technology. In this study, bench-scale filtration experiments were carried out to study the fouling behaviour during the NF of a synthetic landfill leachate. The results indicate that calcium in combination with organic matter could ...

Nanofiltration flux, fouling and retention in filtering dilute model waters

Fouling of membranes decreases the applicability of the nanofiltration (NF) process, and thus a deeper understanding of membrane fouling is needed. Fouling and retention of different NF membranes by model feed waters was investigated in a laboratory-scale filtration unit. The model waters were composed so as to imitate the characteristics of chemically pre-treated surface water. No differences ...

Recovery of Flavonoids from Orange Press Liquor by an Integrated Membrane Process

Orange press liquor is a by-product generated by the citrus processing industry containing huge amounts of natural phenolic compounds with recognized antioxidant activity. In this work, an integrated membrane process for the recovery of flavonoids from orange press liquors was investigated on a laboratory scale. The liquor was previously clarified by ultrafiltration (UF) in selected operating c...

A physical impact of organic fouling layers on bacterial adhesion during nanofiltration.

Organic conditioning films have been shown to alter properties of surfaces, such as hydrophobicity and surface free energy. Furthermore, initial bacterial adhesion has been shown to depend on the conditioning film surface properties as opposed to the properties of the virgin surface. For the particular case of nanofiltration membranes under permeate flux conditions, however, the conditioning fi...

Colloidal Fouling of Nanofiltration Membranes: Development of a Standard Operating Procedure

Fouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes is the most significant obstacle to the development of a sustainable and energy-efficient NF process. Colloidal fouling and performance decline in NF processes is complex due to the combination of cake formation and salt concentration polarization effects, which are influenced by the properties of the colloids and the membrane, the operating conditions o...
